Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Levemir (insulin detemir) is your long-acting background insulin, and its whole job is to gently lower your blood sugar. Damiana hasn't been studied much in people, but in animal research it appeared to nudge blood sugar down on its own. So in theory, stacking it on top of your insulin could push your numbers a little lower than expected.

If that happened, you might notice classic low-sugar signs like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, a racing heart, or feeling confused or unusually hungry. To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based on lab and animal data, not strong human proof. You don't need to panic, but please don't start or stop anything on your own. If you'd like to try damiana, check with your pharmacist or doctor first, and keep an eye on your home glucose readings.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Insulin determir page

“Anyone using insulin detemir (Levemir) should treat this list with real caution, because nearly every one of the 242 ingredients on it acts on blood sugar, and most stack extra glucose-lowering on top of the insulin you already inject. Only two carry a major rating, but both deserve understanding first: Siberian cocklebur, which has ca…”

About Damiana

What is Damiana?

Damiana
  • Low libido / aphrodisiac
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Mood and mild low energy
  • Digestive upset
  • Headache and general tonic

Damiana is a traditional herb most famous as an aphrodisiac and mild mood-lifter, but solid human evidence for any of its uses is very limited. It is generally well tolerated in the small amounts found in teas, but quality studies are lacking, so talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it—especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a health condition.
