Damiana and Ranitidine

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Ranitidine and Damiana in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Ranitidine

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Ranitidine is filed under 6 classifications — including h2-blockers, cytochrome p450 2d6 (cyp2d6) inhibitors, organic anion transporter 3 (oat3) substrates. Damiana has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being antidiabetes drugs (moderate) — and none of Ranitidine’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What Damiana Itself Has Been Linked To

This is not an interaction — nothing below involves Ranitidine. It is the side-effect record for Damiana on its own, from the licensed Natural Medicines monograph. If something new turns up after you add Damiana, this list is the first place to look. One entry is worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

  • Seizures Worth acting on Additional detail

“Orally, 200 grams of damiana extract has caused tetanus-like convulsions and paroxysms resulting in symptoms similar to rabies or strychnine poisoning (4).”

Everything above comes from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record for Damiana — expand a row for the licensed statement it rests on. We read the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Ranitidine’s FDA label too, and the two lists don’t meaningfully overlap — which is why no Ranitidine column appears here.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ranitidine page

“Ranitidine (Zantac) is a heartburn and ulcer medicine gentle enough to have sold over the counter, but two of the 74 supplements and herbs on file with it earn real caution and are worth understanding first. Activated charcoal can soak up ranitidine in the gut and blunt the dose, and St.”

About Damiana

What is Damiana?

Damiana
  • Low libido / aphrodisiac
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Mood and mild low energy
  • Digestive upset
  • Headache and general tonic

Damiana is a traditional herb most famous as an aphrodisiac and mild mood-lifter, but solid human evidence for any of its uses is very limited. It is generally well tolerated in the small amounts found in teas, but quality studies are lacking, so talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it—especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a health condition.

Turnera diffusa · Passifloraceae · Leaves (and sometimes stems) · Tea, capsules, tinctures, liquid extracts, dried leaf

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Damiana is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Damiana record says about it on its own.

Damiana: dosing

There is no well-established standard dose for damiana. The amount people use varies widely depending on the form—tea, capsule, or tincture. The safest approach is to follow the directions on the product label and not exceed the recommended amount. Because strength differs from product to product, a pharmacist can help you decide whether a particular product and dose make sense for you.If you try damiana, start low, watch how you feel, and stop if you notice side effects.

Ranitidine treats a range of stomach acid–related conditions. Prescription-strength ranitidine (capsules, tablets, and oral solution) is used for active duodenal ulcers (ulcers in the small intestine), active benign gastric ulcers (stomach ulcers), GERD (acid reflux disease), erosive esophagitis (acid damage to the esophagus), and pathological hypersecretory conditions — rare disorders where the stomach makes far too much acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It is also used as maintenance therapy to keep duodenal and gastric ulcers from coming back after they have healed.

Over-the-counter products — including Acid Reducer and Acid Reducer 150 tablets — are approved to relieve heartburn associated with acid indigestion and sour stomach, and to prevent that heartburn when taken before eating or drinking foods that trigger it.
