Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
SEROTONERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Benzocaine, Dextromethorphan
Benzocaine, Dextromethorphan falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Fermented Wheat Germ Extract interacts with.
Animal research shows that fermented wheat germ can increase levels of serotonin in the brain.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
The ingredient that matters here is dextromethorphan, the cough suppressant in Tetra-Formula. Dextromethorphan nudges serotonin activity in the brain. Animal studies hint that fermented wheat germ extract may also raise brain serotonin, so the concern is that stacking the two could, in theory, add up and tip you toward too much serotonin. The benzocaine part numbs the throat and isn't really involved.
I want to be honest about how shaky this is. This is based only on lab and animal research, not on people, so it's a theoretical worry, not a proven one. Signs of excess serotonin would include feeling jittery, sweaty, shaky, fast heartbeat, or confusion. If you use both regularly, just run it by your pharmacist or oncologist first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Benzocaine, Dextromethorphan page
“Tetra-Formula pairs benzocaine, a throat-numbing agent, with dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant that raises serotonin activity, and that second ingredient explains why 21 of the 24 supplement interactions on file share one theme, pushing serotonin higher and raising the risk of serotonin syndrome (agitation, racing heart, fever, con…”

About Fermented Wheat Germ Extract
What is Fermented Wheat Germ Extract?
- Cancer supportive care (as a complementary product)
- Immune support
- General wellness during cancer treatment
- Antioxidant support
- Fatigue during illness
Fermented wheat germ extract is a supplement made by fermenting wheat germ with yeast, and it is most often marketed for people going through cancer treatment. While some early research and a few small studies are interesting, the overall evidence is limited and far from conclusive, so it should never replace standard medical care. Talk with your oncologist or pharmacist before using it, since it is a supplement and not an approved treatment.
