Why this applies to nilotinib

nilotinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goji interacts with.

Theoretically, goji berry might inhibit CYP3A4 and reduce metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that goji berry juice inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Concomitant use with goji may decrease metabolism and increase levels of CYP3A4 substrates. However, this has not been reported in humans.

Here's the simple version: your body clears nilotinib using an enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab studies, goji berry juice appears to slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in real life, nilotinib could clear more slowly and build up in your blood. With higher levels, you might see more of this drug's known side effects, like nausea, fatigue, rash, headache, or changes in heart rhythm (nilotinib carries a warning about QT prolongation, which matters here).

That said, this is theoretical. It's only been seen in a test tube, not in people, so we don't know how much goji you'd need or whether it matters at all. Because nilotinib is a serious cancer medicine where levels count, I'd still play it safe. Please check with your oncology team or pharmacist before adding concentrated goji supplements or juice.

About Nilotinib

What Is Nilotinib Used For?

Brand name: Tasigna

  • Nilotinib is used to treat certain types of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML; a type of cancer of the white blood cells) who have recently found to have this condition in adults and children 1 year of age and older. It is also used to treat certain types of CML in adults whose disease could not be treated successfully with imatinib (Gleevec) or adults who cannot take imatinib because of side effects. Nilotinib is also used to treat certain types of CML in children 1 year of age or older whose disease could not be treated successfully with other tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapies or who cannot take these medications because of side effects. Nilotinib is in a class of medications called kinase inhibitors. It works by blocking the action of the abnormal protein that signals cancer cells to multiply. This helps to stop or slow the spread of cancer cells.
