Here's the gist: your body uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to help clear dextroamphetamine. Goldenseal can slow that enzyme down. When the cleanup crew works slower, more of the medication can linger in your system, so its effects (and side effects) may feel stronger than usual.

For a stimulant like this, that could mean more of the typical things, a faster or pounding heartbeat, higher blood pressure, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, or a poor appetite. Dextroamphetamine is an active drug (not a prodrug), so blocking CYP2D6 tends to raise its levels, not lower them. The evidence here is real but not rock-solid, so I wouldn't panic. Just don't add goldenseal without checking with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Dextroamphetamine Used For?

Brand name: Dexedrine

Dextroamphetamine treats two conditions: ADHD and narcolepsy (a sleep disorder causing uncontrollable daytime sleepiness). It is available in multiple forms — tablets, extended-release capsules, oral solution, and a skin patch — and the approved age ranges vary by product.

Oral tablets (Zenzedi, generic) and oral solutions (Procentra, generic) are approved for ADHD in children as young as 3 years old and for narcolepsy. Extended-release capsules (Dexedrine, generic) are approved for ADHD in children ages 6 to 16 and for narcolepsy. Xelstrym, the transdermal patch, is approved only for ADHD — in adults and children ages 6 and older — and is not indicated for narcolepsy.
