Dextroamphetamine falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group 5-htp interacts with.

Combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might cause additive serotonergic effects.
5-HTP can increase serotonin levels and cause serotonergic effects. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. However, serotonin syndrome with 5-HTP has not yet been reported in humans. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using 5-HTP with serotonergic drugs.

Here's the short version: dextroamphetamine doesn't just wake up your brain, it also nudges serotonin levels up a bit along with dopamine and norepinephrine. 5-HTP is a direct building block your body turns into serotonin. Put the two together and you're pushing serotonin from two directions at once, which theoretically raises the odds of too much serotonin activity.

To be fair, this concern comes from how these substances work on paper, not from real-world reports of problems with this combo, so I don't want to scare you. Still, it's worth knowing the warning signs of serotonin overload: agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, muscle twitching, or feeling confused. If you take Dexedrine or Xelstrym and are thinking about 5-HTP, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Dextroamphetamine Used For?

Brand name: Dexedrine

Dextroamphetamine treats two conditions: ADHD and narcolepsy (a sleep disorder causing uncontrollable daytime sleepiness). It is available in multiple forms — tablets, extended-release capsules, oral solution, and a skin patch — and the approved age ranges vary by product.

Oral tablets (Zenzedi, generic) and oral solutions (Procentra, generic) are approved for ADHD in children as young as 3 years old and for narcolepsy. Extended-release capsules (Dexedrine, generic) are approved for ADHD in children ages 6 to 16 and for narcolepsy. Xelstrym, the transdermal patch, is approved only for ADHD — in adults and children ages 6 and older — and is not indicated for narcolepsy.
