Green Tea + Citalopram
Citalopram brand name: Celexa.
Citalopram falls into 2 drug categories that Green Tea can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the levels and adverse effects of caffeine.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Green Tea interacts with whole categories of medication. Citalopram falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Green Tea in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INHIBITORS
1 of 2Why this applies to Citalopram
Citalopram falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INHIBITORS — the group Green Tea interacts with.
Green tea contains caffeine. Caffeine is metabolized by cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2),. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP1A2 may decrease the clearance rate of caffeine from green tea and increase caffeine levels.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to understand about this particular pairing: it's really about the caffeine in green tea, not the citalopram itself. Citalopram can mildly block an enzyme called CYP1A2, which is the same enzyme your body uses to clear caffeine. So in theory, drinking caffeinated green tea while on Celexa could let caffeine linger a bit longer, leaving you feeling jittery, anxious, restless, or having trouble sleeping or a racing heartbeat.
I want to be honest that this is theoretical, based on how these two interact on paper, not on strong real-world studies. A cup or two of green tea is unlikely to cause problems for most people. If you drink a lot or take concentrated green tea extracts and notice extra jitteriness, chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Citalopram also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro and in vivo research suggests that green tea can inhibit intestinal CYP3A and induce hepatic CYP3A4 enzymes. However, this effect is unlikely to be clinically significant, as green tea does not appear to affect CYP3A4 activity in humans.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the good news if you enjoy a cup of green tea while taking citalopram (Celexa). Citalopram is partly broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and lab studies show green tea can nudge this enzyme in both directions. But here's the key point: when researchers looked at actual people, green tea did not meaningfully change how this enzyme works. So your citalopram levels are very unlikely to shift in a way you'd notice.
In plain terms, your normal daily tea habit shouldn't make citalopram weaker or cause extra side effects like nausea, drowsiness, or jitteriness. This is based on weak, mostly test-tube evidence. If you're taking concentrated green tea extract pills, just mention it to your pharmacist to be safe.

About Green Tea
What is Green Tea?
- Antioxidant support
- Weight loss
- Heart health
- Mental alertness
- Cancer risk reduction
Green tea is a popular beverage rich in antioxidants called catechins, and drinking it in normal amounts is considered safe for most people. Concentrated green tea extracts are a different story—they may help modestly with weight or heart health for some, but high doses have been linked to rare liver problems. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking green tea supplements, especially if you have liver concerns or are pregnant.
About Citalopram
What Is Citalopram Used For?
Brand name: Celexa
Citalopram — available as tablets (including brand Celexa), oral solution, and capsules — is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. This includes depression that causes persistent low mood, loss of interest in everyday activities, changes in sleep or appetite, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.
Citalopram capsules are specifically indicated for adults with MDD but are not intended for starting or stopping treatment — another citalopram product must be used for dose titration. All forms are indicated for adults only; citalopram tablets are not approved for use in children.

Natural Medicines records Citalopram as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Green Tea — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
