Green Tea and danicopan

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Green Tea interacts with whole categories of medication. danicopan falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Green Tea in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to danicopan

danicopan falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Green Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might have additive adverse hepatotoxic effects.
Green tea extract supplements have been linked to several cases of hepatotoxicity and might have additive hepatotoxic effects with other drugs..
Severity Moderate Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version. This isn't about green tea changing how danicopan works or how your body clears it. Instead, it's about a possible double-hit on your liver. Danicopan can affect liver enzymes in some people, and concentrated green tea extract supplements have been tied to rare cases of liver trouble. Put them together and the concern is that the stress on your liver could add up.

To be clear, this is a theoretical, unlikely concern based mostly on scattered reports, not strong studies. Drinking green tea as a normal beverage is very different from taking high-dose extract capsules. Watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a green tea supplement.

P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

danicopan also falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES.

Green tea might increase the levels and adverse effects of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) substrates.
In vitro research and case reports suggest that green tea inhibits drug efflux by P-gp, potentially increasing serum levels of P-gp substrates. Case reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) adverse drug reaction database describe increased toxicity in patients taking green tea and certain P-gp substrates.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here is the short version for danicopan (Voydeya), which is added on to treatment for a rare blood condition called PNH. Your body uses a little pump called P-glycoprotein to move certain drugs out of your cells. Green tea may slow that pump down a bit. Since danicopan is carried by that same pump, blocking it could let a little more of the drug hang around in your blood than expected, which in theory could bump up side effects like headache, nausea, or stiff, achy joints.

I want to be honest that this is weak evidence, based mostly on lab studies and a few scattered case reports, not solid trials. A cup or two of green tea is unlikely to cause trouble; concentrated extract pills are the bigger question mark. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a green tea supplement rather than changing anything on your own.

About Green Tea

What is Green Tea?

Green Tea
  • Antioxidant support
  • Weight loss
  • Heart health
  • Mental alertness
  • Cancer risk reduction

Green tea is a popular beverage rich in antioxidants called catechins, and drinking it in normal amounts is considered safe for most people. Concentrated green tea extracts are a different story—they may help modestly with weight or heart health for some, but high doses have been linked to rare liver problems. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking green tea supplements, especially if you have liver concerns or are pregnant.
