Green Tea + Vincristine Sulfate
Vincristine Sulfate brand name: Marqibo Kit.
Vincristine Sulfate falls into 2 drug categories that Green Tea can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Green tea might increase the levels and adverse effects of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) substrates.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Green Tea interacts with whole categories of medication. Vincristine Sulfate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Green Tea in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Vincristine Sulfate
Vincristine Sulfate falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Green Tea interacts with.
In vitro research and case reports suggest that green tea inhibits drug efflux by P-gp, potentially increasing serum levels of P-gp substrates. Case reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) adverse drug reaction database describe increased toxicity in patients taking green tea and certain P-gp substrates.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Vincristine is a chemotherapy drug that your body partly clears using a cellular pump called P-glycoprotein (P-gp). Green tea, especially in concentrated extract form, may slow that pump down a bit. In theory, that could let more vincristine linger in your system and make its side effects stronger. With vincristine, the side effects we worry about most are nerve-related: tingling, numbness, or weakness in the hands and feet, constipation, and muscle aches.
I want to be honest that this is based on lab studies and a few scattered case reports, so it is not a strong or certain interaction. A cup or two of regular green tea is unlikely to be the problem; high-dose extracts are the bigger question. Since vincristine is serious chemo, please run any green tea product past your oncology team before using it.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Vincristine Sulfate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro and in vivo research suggests that green tea can inhibit intestinal CYP3A and induce hepatic CYP3A4 enzymes. However, this effect is unlikely to be clinically significant, as green tea does not appear to affect CYP3A4 activity in humans.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the short version: vincristine is cleared from your body partly by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and green tea can nudge that enzyme in the lab. In theory, if green tea sped that enzyme up, vincristine could clear faster; if it slowed it down, the drug could linger and cause more of its usual problems like nerve tingling, numbness, constipation, or weakness. But this is the key point: in actual human studies, green tea doesn't meaningfully change CYP3A4 activity, so a real-world effect is unlikely.
Vincristine is potent chemotherapy with a narrow safety margin, so I'd still keep your oncology team in the loop about any green tea supplements (the concentrated extracts, not a normal cup). Don't change anything on your own.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Vincristine Sulfate page
“Chemotherapy leaves little room for error, and vincristine sulfate (Marqibo) is no exception. Nearly everything on this list changes how the body handles the drug through a pathway called CYP3A4, so a supplement can either push vincristine levels high enough to worsen its nerve toxicity or drop them low enough to blunt the cancer treat…”

About Green Tea
What is Green Tea?
- Antioxidant support
- Weight loss
- Heart health
- Mental alertness
- Cancer risk reduction
Green tea is a popular beverage rich in antioxidants called catechins, and drinking it in normal amounts is considered safe for most people. Concentrated green tea extracts are a different story—they may help modestly with weight or heart health for some, but high doses have been linked to rare liver problems. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking green tea supplements, especially if you have liver concerns or are pregnant.
