Ibuprofen falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Gymnema interacts with.

Theoretically, gymnema might increase or decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
Animal research shows that gymnema can induce the CYP2C9 enzyme. In one animal study, gymnema caused a 2.4-fold increase in the clearance of tolbutamide, a CYP2C9 substrate, in rats. In vitro research also shows that gymnema can inhibit CYP2C9.

Here's the situation with these two. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 to break down ibuprofen, and gymnema may nudge that enzyme one way or the other. The catch is that the evidence is really thin. It comes from lab dishes and animal studies, not from people. In animals, gymnema sped the enzyme up, which could clear ibuprofen a bit faster and slightly soften its pain or fever relief. In a test tube, it did the opposite and slowed the enzyme, which could let ibuprofen linger and raise the chance of stomach upset.

Honestly, for an as-needed pain reliever like ibuprofen, this is mostly theoretical and not something I'd lose sleep over. Ibuprofen is not a prodrug, so its effect tracks its blood levels. If you plan to use both regularly, just run it by your pharmacist first.

What Is Ibuprofen Used For?

Brand names: Motrin, Children's Motrin, Advil, Children's Advil, Fenbid Forte Gel, Ibugel Forte, Arthrofen, Ebufac, Rimafen, Calprofen, Fenpaed, Galprofen, Nurofen for Children, Orbifen for Children, Brufen, Brufen Retard, Fenbid, Tab-Profen, Ibuprofen, Calodor

Oral ibuprofen products (tablets, coated tablets, and liquid-filled capsules) are used to temporarily relieve minor aches and pains from headache, backache, toothache, muscular aches, menstrual cramps, minor arthritis pain, and the common cold, and to temporarily reduce fever. The oral prescription tablet (Ibu) is also indicated for the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, mild to moderate pain, and primary dysmenorrhea (painful periods).

Caldolor, an intravenous (IV) form, is approved for adults and children 3 months and older to manage mild to moderate pain, to manage moderate to severe pain alongside opioid pain medicines, and to reduce fever. A separate intravenous solution, Ibuprofen Lysine, is used specifically in premature infants to close a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) — an abnormal blood vessel connection near the heart — when standard medical management has not worked.
