Celecoxib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Gymnema interacts with.

Theoretically, gymnema might increase or decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
Animal research shows that gymnema can induce the CYP2C9 enzyme. In one animal study, gymnema caused a 2.4-fold increase in the clearance of tolbutamide, a CYP2C9 substrate, in rats. In vitro research also shows that gymnema can inhibit CYP2C9.

Here's the deal with pairing gymnema and celecoxib (Celebrex). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 to break celecoxib down, and gymnema may nudge that enzyme in either direction. Celecoxib works as-is (it's not a prodrug), so the worry runs both ways depending on what the herb does.

If gymnema speeds up that enzyme (which animal studies hint at), celecoxib could clear faster and give you less arthritis pain relief. If it slows the enzyme instead, levels could rise and bring more side effects like stomach upset, fluid retention, or higher blood pressure. Honestly, this is mostly theory from lab and animal work, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Celecoxib

What Is Celecoxib Used For?

Brand names: Celebrex, Elyxyb

Celecoxib capsules and the generic oral suspension treat the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) in children 2 years and older. Celecoxib capsules also treat acute pain and primary dysmenorrhea (painful periods) in adults.

ELYXYB (celecoxib oral liquid) is specifically approved for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults — but it is not used to prevent migraines. VYSCOXA (celecoxib oral suspension) is not indicated for acute pain or primary dysmenorrhea.
