Propranolol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Gymnema interacts with.

Theoretically, gymnema might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Animal and in vitro research shows that gymnema can inhibit the CYP1A2 enzyme. In one animal study, oral administration of gymnema for 7 days increased the plasma concentrations of phenacetin, a CYP1A2 substrate, by about 1.4-fold and reduced the clearance of phenacetin by about 29%.

Here's the gist: your body uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to help break down propranolol. Gymnema may slow that enzyme down a bit, which in theory could let more propranolol linger in your blood. Since propranolol isn't a prodrug (it works as-is, not after activation), more of it usually means stronger effects, like a slower heart rate, lower blood pressure, dizziness, tiredness, or feeling lightheaded when you stand up.

The honest part: this concern comes only from lab and animal data, not human studies, so it's theoretical and the change was modest. I wouldn't panic. Still, if you take propranolol and want to try gymnema, check with your pharmacist or doctor first, and keep an eye on your pulse and how you feel.

What Is Propranolol (Cardiovascular) Used For?

Brand names: Inderal LA, Inderal, Angilol, Syprol, Inderal Injection, Half-Inderal LA, Bedranol SR, Half Beta Prograne, Beta Prograne, Lopranol LA, Slo-Pro, InnoPran XL

This intravenous (IV) form of propranolol is used in hospital or clinical settings to treat dangerous heart rhythm problems. It is generally reserved for life-threatening arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms) or those that occur during anesthesia.

Specific conditions it treats include fast heart rates coming from the upper chambers of the heart (supraventricular tachycardia), certain arrhythmias caused by digitalis toxicity, dangerous ventricular rhythms that haven't responded to other treatments, and fast heart rates caused by excess adrenaline-like substances during surgery.
