Most clinical evidence suggests that taking Hibiscus sabdariffa reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure. In animal research, Hibiscus sabdariffa increased the hypotensive effects of single doses of losartan and amlodipine.

Here's the simple version: amlodipine already relaxes your blood vessels to bring your pressure down. Hibiscus, especially as a concentrated supplement or several cups of strong tea a day, has a mild blood-pressure-lowering effect of its own. Stack the two together and you may push your numbers a little lower than you intended.

If that happens, you might notice dizziness, lightheadedness when you stand up, headache, flushing, or feeling more tired than usual. To be fair, this is mostly theoretical and based on animal studies, so it's not a guaranteed problem, and an occasional cup of hibiscus tea is unlikely to cause trouble. Still, if you'd like to use hibiscus regularly, check in with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your home readings.

Theoretically, Hibiscus sabdariffa extract might reduce the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract inhibits CYP3A4. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear amlodipine out of your system. Lab (test tube) studies suggest hibiscus may slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, more amlodipine could linger in your blood, which might nudge its effects up. With amlodipine that could mean extra blood-pressure lowering, lightheadedness, flushing, headache, or some ankle swelling.

Now the reassuring part: this is only a theoretical concern. It hasn't actually been seen in people, and a cup or two of hibiscus tea is unlikely to cause trouble. Both hibiscus and amlodipine lower blood pressure on their own, so if you use concentrated hibiscus supplements regularly, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Amlodipine Used For?

Brand name: Katerzia

Amlodipine treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children aged 6–17 years. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Sdamlo (oral solution) is specifically indicated for hypertension in adults and pediatric patients 6 years of age and older.

Amlodipine also treats coronary artery disease in adults, including chronic stable angina (chest pain with exertion), vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal's or variant angina, caused by coronary artery spasms), and documented coronary artery disease in patients without heart failure or significantly reduced heart pumping function.
