In this combination product, the part that matters here is the caffeine. Your body clears caffeine using a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, and lab (test tube) studies suggest hibiscus may slow that enzyme down a bit. In theory, that could let caffeine linger longer, so you might notice more of the usual caffeine effects: feeling jittery, a faster heartbeat, or trouble sleeping.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's only theoretical, based on lab work, and hasn't actually been reported in real people. A cup or two of hibiscus tea is very unlikely to cause a problem. The aspirin and hydrocodone pieces aren't really affected by this. Still, if you use concentrated hibiscus supplements, check in with your pharmacist.

Here's the piece that matters with this combo pill: the hydrocodone part relies partly on an enzyme called CYP2D6 to turn into its more active pain-relieving form. In a test-tube study, concentrated hibiscus extract slowed that same enzyme down. If that happened in real life, you might get slightly less pain relief from the hydrocodone, since less of it gets converted. The aspirin and caffeine parts aren't really affected this way.

The honest truth is this is only theoretical, based on lab work, and it has never been seen in actual people. A cup or two of hibiscus tea almost certainly won't be an issue. Still, if you're using concentrated hibiscus supplements, it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor.

This combination pill includes hydrocodone, an opioid pain reliever that your body partly processes through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In a lab setting, concentrated hibiscus extract has been shown to slow that enzyme down. In theory, if hibiscus blocked CYP3A4, a bit more hydrocodone could hang around, which might add to side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, or slowed breathing.

Here's the honest part: this is only a test-tube finding, and it has never been reported in real people. A cup or two of tart hibiscus tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Still, if you take strong daily hibiscus supplements with this medicine, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor.
