Ivosidenib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hibiscus Sabdariffa interacts with.

Theoretically, Hibiscus sabdariffa extract might reduce the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract inhibits CYP3A4. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear ivosidenib (Tibsovo) out of your system. In test-tube studies, concentrated hibiscus extract slowed that same enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, ivosidenib could linger longer and build up, which in theory might mean more side effects like nausea, fatigue, or a change in your heart's rhythm (a QT prolongation that doctors watch for with this drug).

Here's the reassuring part: this is only a theoretical concern from lab data, and it has never actually been seen in people. A cup or two of tart hibiscus tea is unlikely to matter much. Still, because this is a serious cancer medicine, please run any hibiscus supplement past your oncology team or pharmacist first.

About Ivosidenib

What Is Ivosidenib Used For?

Brand name: Tibsovo

Tibsovo (ivosidenib) is used to treat adults who have a susceptible IDH1 mutation, confirmed by an FDA-approved test. It treats newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in adults 75 or older, or those who cannot tolerate intensive chemotherapy — either alone or combined with a medicine called azacitidine. It also treats relapsed or refractory AML (AML that has come back or stopped responding to treatment) and relapsed or refractory myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS).

Tibsovo is also approved for adults with previously treated, locally advanced or metastatic cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer that has spread) who carry an IDH1 mutation.
