Here's the gist for hibiscus and your olanzapine. Olanzapine is cleared from your body partly by a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. In lab (test tube) studies, hibiscus extract appears to slow that same enzyme down. In theory, if the enzyme works slower, a bit more olanzapine could linger in your system, which might mean stronger effects like drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling more sedated than usual.

The reassuring part: this is only a theoretical concern based on lab research, and it has never actually been reported in people. Everyday hibiscus tea is unlikely to cause trouble. Still, if you're using concentrated hibiscus supplements regularly, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Here's the gist with hibiscus and olanzapine (Zyprexa). Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 as one of several ways to break olanzapine down. In a lab dish, hibiscus extract slowed that enzyme. If that were to happen in real life, a bit more olanzapine could hang around, which in theory might mean stronger effects like extra drowsiness, dizziness, weight gain, or feeling foggy. Olanzapine is not a prodrug, so blocking the enzyme would tend to raise its levels, not lower them.

That said, this is only a theoretical lab finding and hasn't been seen in actual patients, and CYP2D6 is just one minor pathway for this drug. An occasional cup of hibiscus tea is unlikely to cause trouble. If you're using concentrated hibiscus supplements daily, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

About Olanzapine

What Is Olanzapine Used For?

Brand name: Zyprexa

Olanzapine treats schizophrenia and the manic or mixed episodes of bipolar I disorder in both adults and adolescents (ages 13–17). It can also be used alongside valproate or lithium to treat manic or mixed episodes in adults. When combined with fluoxetine, olanzapine tablets and orally disintegrating tablets are used to treat depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder and treatment-resistant depression in adults.

Olanzapine intramuscular injection (short-acting) is used by healthcare providers to quickly calm acute agitation in adults with schizophrenia or bipolar I mania. Zyprexa Relprevv — a separate, long-acting intramuscular formulation available only through a restricted program — is indicated specifically for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults.
