Why this applies to Dronabinol

Dronabinol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Higenamine interacts with.

Theoretically, higenamine might increase the levels and clinical effects drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that higenamine inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes by 21%. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear dronabinol (Marinol, Syndros). In lab tests, higenamine slowed that enzyme down a little (about 21%). If it did the same thing in people, dronabinol could hang around longer and feel stronger. That might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, a racing or pounding heartbeat, confusion, or feeling unusually "high" or anxious.

The important part: this is only a test-tube finding. It has not been seen in real people, so we can't say it actually happens. Still, since higenamine itself can speed up your heart and nudge blood pressure, stacking it with dronabinol isn't something I'd do without checking first. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Dronabinol Used For?

Brand names: Marinol, Syndros

Dronabinol — available as capsules (Marinol, Dronabinol) and as an oral solution (Syndros, Dronabinol oral solution) — is approved for two conditions in adults. First, it treats anorexia (severely reduced appetite) associated with weight loss in patients with AIDS. Second, it controls nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy in patients who have not gotten enough relief from standard anti-nausea treatments.

Both uses apply to all available formulations, but dosing timing and meal instructions differ between the capsule and oral solution products. Always follow the specific instructions for the product you have been prescribed.
