Jackfruit and Fish Oil Triglycerides

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Fish Oil Triglycerides

Fish Oil Triglycerides falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Jackfruit interacts with.

Theoretically, jackfruit latex might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Jackfruit latex, which is the sap from jackfruit bark, contains chemicals that might increase the risk of bleeding. In vitro research shows that jackfruit latex contains a glycoprotein constituent that prolongs the activated partial thrombin time (aPTT) and reduces the activity of blood coagulation factors XIa and alpha-XIIa. Jackfruit latex also contains a protease constituent that has been shown to have fibrinolytic activity in vitro. Other parts of jackfruit, including the fruit and leaves, have not been shown to contain chemicals with fibrinolytic and anticoagulant activity.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind: high doses of fish oil, like Omegaven, can have a mild blood-thinning effect of their own. The concern on file is that jackfruit latex (the sticky sap from the bark, not the fruit you eat) showed clot-slowing activity in lab studies. Stacked together, the theory is they could add up and make bleeding or easy bruising a little more likely.

The good news: this is based only on test-tube research, and the everyday fruit, leaves, and seeds did not show this effect. So enjoying jackfruit as a food alongside your fish oil is very unlikely to be a problem. If you're using a concentrated jackfruit product or notice unusual bruising or bleeding, check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Fish Oil Triglycerides page

“Nearly everything on this page points at one danger for anyone receiving Fish Oil Triglycerides (Omegaven): bleeding. Omega-3 fats can slow clotting somewhat on their own, and 202 of the interacting supplements and herbs add their own blood-thinning or antiplatelet effects on top of that, so combining them casually is a real mistake.”

About Jackfruit

What is Jackfruit?

Jackfruit
  • General nutrition
  • Blood sugar support
  • Digestive health (fiber)
  • Antioxidant support
  • Wound care (traditional, latex/leaves)

Jackfruit is a large tropical fruit that is nutritious and safe to eat as a food, offering fiber, vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants. While its leaves, seeds, and other parts are used in traditional medicine for things like blood sugar and digestion, strong human evidence for these supplement uses is limited. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated jackfruit products for a health condition.
