Evidence from in vitro research suggests that constituents of jequirity beans can inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, jequirity might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Reteplase (Retevase) is a powerful clot-busting medicine given in the hospital during emergencies like a heart attack. It works by breaking down clots that are blocking blood flow, so bleeding risk is already something the medical team watches very closely while you receive it.

Here's the concern with jequirity: lab studies suggest its compounds may keep platelets (the tiny cells that help your blood clot) from sticking together. In theory, adding that to reteplase could stack on top of the bleeding risk and make it harder for your body to stop bleeding. To be clear, this is only a theoretical worry based on test-tube research, not real patient cases. Honestly, the bigger issue is that jequirity seeds contain abrin, a severe poison, so this plant should not be used at all. Please talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using any herbal product.

Jequirity (Abrus precatorius) is a tropical plant whose bright red, black-tipped seeds contain abrin, one of the most toxic plant proteins known. Despite a long history in traditional medicine, the seeds are dangerously poisonous and there is no reliable evidence that it is safe or effective. It should not be used as a supplement or medicine.
