L-tryptophan + Digoxin
Digoxin brand names: Lanoxicaps, Lanoxin, Digitek.
We found no known interaction between L-tryptophan and Digoxin in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.
L-tryptophan and Digoxin
We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.
No Known Interaction Found
We did not find a documented interaction between Digoxin and L-tryptophan in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.
If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.
Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.
L-tryptophan safety at a glance
Pregnancy & breastfeeding ratings are from Natural Medicines (Therapeutic Research Center) — the full detail is in the Special populations card below. Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.
Why No Interaction Is Listed for Digoxin
Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Digoxin is filed under 5 classifications — including glucuronidated drugs, p-glycoprotein substrates, oral drugs. L-tryptophan has documented interactions with 2 drug classes — the most serious being cns depressants (major) and serotonergic drugs (moderate) — and none of Digoxin’s classifications are among them.
Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.
L-tryptophan Does Interact With Other Medications
L-tryptophan has 248 major, 146 moderate known drug interactions in our database — Digoxin isn’t one of them. If you take anything else, check it against the full list below.

Questions About L-tryptophan or Digoxin
These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. Each one covers L-tryptophan or Digoxin, not necessarily both, but if one is close to what you were about to ask it will usually go further than a database entry can:

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Digoxin
This page covers L-tryptophan only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Digoxin page lists 113 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.
The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Aloe (major), Blue Flag (major), Danshen (major) and European Buckthorn (major).
By severity: 18 major · 79 moderate · 16 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Digoxin page
“Digoxin is a heart medicine with a narrow therapeutic index, meaning the gap between a helpful blood level and a harmful one is small, and few drugs give me more pause when supplements enter the picture. The most serious entries here are herbs that themselves contain digoxin-like cardiac glycosides, foxglove and lily-of-the-valley amon…”

Where does our data come from?
- Source: the Natural Medicines (TRC Healthcare) clinical database — the evidence-graded professional reference for herb & supplement interactions.
- Citation library: 103,510 references behind our interaction content, 65,311 of them resolved to verified PubMed/DOI sources. See every L-tryptophan reference on this page ↓
- Freshness: we automatically re-check this combination every week — this pair was last verified October 4, 2026. The L-tryptophan and Digoxin records this page draws on were last updated July 11, 2026.
- What “no known interaction” means: no documented interaction in the sources above — not a guarantee of safety. Supplements are studied far less than prescription drugs, so we say exactly what the evidence supports, and nothing more.
About L-tryptophan
What is L-tryptophan?
- Sleep problems
- Low mood and depression
- Anxiety
- Premenstrual symptoms
- Appetite and food cravings
L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid the body uses to make serotonin and melatonin, and people take it to support sleep and mood. The evidence for supplement use is limited and mixed, and there are real safety concerns, so talk to a pharmacist or doctor before trying it.

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether L-tryptophan is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our L-tryptophan record says about it on its own.
L-tryptophan: dosing
There is no official, standardized dose of L-tryptophan as a supplement. They can help you decide whether it is appropriate for you and whether it is safe with your other medicines and health conditions. Do not assume that taking more will work better, as higher amounts may increase side effects.

About Digoxin
What Is Digoxin Used For?
Brand names: Lanoxicaps, Lanoxin, Digitek
Digoxin treats mild to moderate heart failure in adults. It improves heart failure symptoms and exercise capacity, and it reduces heart failure-related hospitalizations and emergency care. It does not change survival.
It also helps control the resting heart rate in adults with chronic atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat). In children with heart failure, the tablet, oral solution and most injection products are used to increase the heart’s pumping strength (myocardial contractility). Some older injection labels list only the adult uses. Digoxin Oral Solution should not be used for multifocal atrial tachycardia.

Digoxin Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Digoxin as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with L-tryptophan — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
