Tamoxifen Citrate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Limonene interacts with.

There's preliminary evidence that limonene might be a substrate for cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9), as well causing its induction. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for a decrease in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 in patients taking limonene. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as diclofenac (Cataflam, Voltaren), ibuprofen (Motrin), meloxicam (Mobic), and piroxicam (Feldene); celecoxib (Celebrex); amitriptyline (Elavil); warfarin (Coumadin); glipizide (Glucotrol); losartan (Cozaar); and others.

Here's the thing about tamoxifen: it's actually a prodrug. Your body has to convert it into its active form (mostly something called endoxifen) before it can do its job fighting breast cancer. That activation depends on liver enzymes, including CYP2C9. So if limonene speeds up this enzyme, as some early lab work hints, the theory is that it could shift how tamoxifen is processed and possibly lower the active levels you're counting on.

I want to be honest, though: this is based only on test-tube and animal studies, and it has not been seen in real people. Citrus you eat is unlikely to matter; concentrated limonene supplements are the question mark. Since tamoxifen protection is too important to gamble with, please run any limonene supplement by your oncologist or pharmacist first.

About Tamoxifen

What Is Tamoxifen Used For?

Brand names: Nolvadex, Soltamox

Tamoxifen is used to treat estrogen receptor-positive metastatic breast cancer in both women and men, and as follow-up (adjuvant) therapy after surgery for early-stage breast cancer in women. It also reduces the occurrence of cancer in the opposite breast when used as adjuvant therapy.

In women with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS — an early, non-invasive breast change) following surgery and radiation, tamoxifen lowers the risk of developing invasive breast cancer. It is also approved to reduce the risk of breast cancer in women who are at high risk but have not yet been diagnosed. Both Tamoxifen Citrate tablets and Soltamox oral solution share these indications.
