Amiodarone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) INHIBITORS — the group Limonene interacts with.

There's preliminary evidence that limonene might be a substrate for cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9). So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for side effects in patients taking limonene and CYP2C9 inhibitors. Some CYP2C9 inhibitors include amiodarone (Cordarone), fluconazole (Diflucan), lovastatin (Mevacor), paroxetine (Paxil), zafirlukast (Accolate), and many others.

Here's the thing to keep straight with this pair: the concern flows toward the limonene, not the amiodarone. Amiodarone blocks an enzyme called CYP2C9, and early lab work hints that limonene may be broken down by that same enzyme. So in theory, amiodarone could slow how your body clears limonene, letting more of it hang around. Your heart medicine itself isn't expected to become weaker or stronger here.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. It comes from test tube and animal studies, and nothing has actually been reported in people. Food amounts of citrus (the peel, a glass of juice) are very unlikely to matter. With concentrated limonene supplements, just run it past your pharmacist or doctor first, since amiodarone is a serious heart drug.

Amiodarone is prescribed for adults with serious, life-threatening heart-rhythm problems that haven't responded to other medications. Specifically, it's used for two dangerous arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats): recurrent ventricular fibrillation (a chaotic, potentially fatal heart rhythm) and recurrent ventricular tachycardia (a dangerously fast heart rhythm that causes unstable blood pressure).

Because amiodarone comes with significant risks, doctors reserve it for situations where other options haven't worked or can't be tolerated. It is not a first-choice medication — it's a last-resort tool for serious, life-threatening conditions.
