Rifampin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) INDUCERS — the group Limonene interacts with.

There's preliminary evidence that limonene might be a substrate for cytochrome P450 2C19 (CYP2C19). CYP2C19 inducers might decrease the effects of limonene. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Inducers of CYP2C19 include carbamazepine (Tegretol), prednisone (Deltasone), and rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane).

Here's the key thing to keep straight: in this pairing, it's the limonene that may take the hit, not your rifampin. Rifampin is a powerful 'inducer,' meaning it revs up certain liver enzymes (including CYP2C19). Since limonene appears to be broken down partly by that same enzyme, rifampin could speed up its clearance and leave you with less limonene in your system, possibly making the supplement work less well.

The good news is this is very early, lab-and-test-tube level evidence, and it hasn't been seen in real people. Your rifampin should keep doing its job against TB or meningitis exposure regardless. Citrus in food won't matter here. If you're using concentrated limonene capsules, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

There's preliminary evidence that limonene might be a substrate for cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9). Inducers of CYP2C9 might decrease limonene levels. Inducers of CYP2C9 include rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane) and secobarbital (Seconal).

Here's a nice surprise: in this pairing, it's the limonene that takes the hit, not your rifampin. Rifampin is one of the body's strongest "speed-up" signals for a liver enzyme called CYP2C9, and lab work suggests limonene gets broken down by that same enzyme. So when rifampin revs things up, your body may clear the limonene faster, leaving you with lower levels of the supplement and possibly less of whatever benefit you were hoping for.

The good news is that your rifampin's job, treating TB or clearing meningitis carriers, should not be weakened by limonene. And this is based only on test-tube and animal data, so it's more theoretical than proven. Still, since rifampin is a serious antibiotic, run any new supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Rifampin

What Is Rifampin Used For?

Brand names: Rifadin, Rimactane, Rifadin Injection, Rofactor

Rifampin treats all forms of tuberculosis (TB). It is almost always used in combination with other antibiotics — your doctor will build a multi-drug regimen tailored to your infection. Treatment usually runs for at least 6 months total.

Rifampin is also used to clear Neisseria meningitidis bacteria from the nose and throat in people who carry the germ without being sick themselves. It is not used to treat active meningococcal disease. The intravenous (IV) forms — Rifadin IV, Rifadin IV NOVAPLUS, and the injectable form of Rifampin — are specifically indicated when a patient cannot take the drug by mouth.
