Limonene + Carbamazepine
Carbamazepine brand names: Tegretol, Tegretol XR, Equetro, Carbatrol, Carnexiv.
Carbamazepine falls into 2 drug categories that Limonene can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. There's preliminary evidence that limonene might be a substrate for cytochrome P450 2C19 (CYP2C19).

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Limonene interacts with whole categories of medication. Carbamazepine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Limonene in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) INDUCERS
1 of 2Why this applies to Carbamazepine
Carbamazepine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) INDUCERS — the group Limonene interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the good news on this pairing: the interaction we have on file actually runs in one direction, and it doesn't hurt your carbamazepine. Carbamazepine is what we call an enzyme inducer, meaning it speeds up a liver pathway called CYP2C19. Limonene appears to be broken down by that same pathway, so in theory carbamazepine could make your body clear the limonene faster, leaving you with less of the supplement to work with.
So your seizure control, trigeminal nerve pain relief, or mood treatment shouldn't be affected here. Just keep in mind this is based only on lab and animal data, not real people, so it's mostly theoretical. If you want the limonene to do its job, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist before adding it.

CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) INDUCERS
2 of 2Carbamazepine also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) INDUCERS.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to keep straight with this pair: the interaction runs in one direction only. Carbamazepine is a known booster (inducer) of liver enzymes, including CYP2C9, and that's the enzyme thought to break down limonene. So if anything, taking carbamazepine could speed up how fast your body clears the limonene, possibly leaving less of it around. Carbamazepine itself is not expected to become stronger or weaker because of limonene here.
I'd also keep this in perspective. This is based only on early lab and animal work, not real human cases, so it's more of a theoretical note than a proven problem. The amount of limonene in everyday citrus is unlikely to matter. If you're using a concentrated limonene supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Carbamazepine page
“Carbamazepine (Tegretol, Carbatrol, Equetro) only controls seizures and mood episodes when its blood level stays inside a tight window, and 284 supplement and herbal ingredients on file can disturb that balance, 12 of them rated major. Grapefruit can push carbamazepine levels up, St.”

About Limonene
What is Limonene?
- Heartburn and acid reflux
- Digestive upset
- Stress and mood support
- Antioxidant support
- General wellness
Limonene is a natural compound found in the peel of citrus fruits like oranges and lemons, and it is used as a flavoring agent and dietary supplement. People take it for heartburn, digestion, and general wellness, but solid human evidence is limited. It is generally well tolerated in food amounts, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.
About Carbamazepine
What Is Carbamazepine Used For?
Brand names: Tegretol, Tegretol XR, Equetro, Carbatrol, Carnexiv
Carbamazepine is used to control certain seizures in epilepsy. It is also used for the pain of true trigeminal neuralgia (severe facial nerve pain). It is not a simple painkiller and should not be used for trivial aches or pains.
Equetro (extended-release capsule) has an added use: treating acute manic or mixed episodes of bipolar I disorder. This use is specific to Equetro.
