Why this applies to Celecoxib

Celecoxib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Limonene interacts with.

There's preliminary evidence that limonene might be a substrate for cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9), as well causing its induction. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for a decrease in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 in patients taking limonene. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as diclofenac (Cataflam, Voltaren), ibuprofen (Motrin), meloxicam (Mobic), and piroxicam (Feldene); celecoxib (Celebrex); amitriptyline (Elavil); warfarin (Coumadin); glipizide (Glucotrol); losartan (Cozaar); and others.

Here's the gist for Celebrex: your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 to clear it from your body. Early lab and animal research hints that limonene might rev up (induce) that same enzyme. If that happened in people, your body could break down celecoxib a little faster, which could leave you with less pain and inflammation relief for your arthritis or other aches.

I want to be straight with you, though: this is only test-tube and animal data, and it has never actually been reported in humans. Everyday citrus in your food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated limonene capsules are the bigger question mark. If you take those regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on how well your Celebrex is working.

What Is Celecoxib Used For?

Brand names: Celebrex, Elyxyb

Celecoxib capsules and the generic oral suspension treat the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) in children 2 years and older. Celecoxib capsules also treat acute pain and primary dysmenorrhea (painful periods) in adults.

ELYXYB (celecoxib oral liquid) is specifically approved for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults — but it is not used to prevent migraines. VYSCOXA (celecoxib oral suspension) is not indicated for acute pain or primary dysmenorrhea.
