Why this applies to Canagliflozin

Some clinical research shows that Padang cassia can reduce blood glucose levels in healthy patients and in patients with diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes). Theoretically, Padang cassia might have additive effects in patients treated with antidiabetes drugs. Dose adjustments to diabetes medications may be necessary.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Canagliflozin (Invokana) already works to bring your blood sugar down by helping your kidneys flush out extra sugar. Padang cassia, which is just a type of cinnamon, may nudge blood sugar a little lower too. So if you take a concentrated cinnamon supplement alongside Invokana, the two could add up and push your numbers lower than expected.

By itself Canagliflozin rarely causes dangerous lows, but adding things that also lower sugar can raise that chance. Watch for shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling foggy. Honestly, the evidence here is modest and a sprinkle of cinnamon in your oatmeal is no concern. It's the daily supplement-strength doses worth mentioning to your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you check your sugar at home.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Canagliflozin page

“Canagliflozin (Invokana) lowers blood sugar, and that is precisely why this list deserves genuine care. Nearly every ingredient on it works on glucose one way or another: most can push it too low when stacked with the drug, while a few, niacin among them, raise it and work against the medicine.”

About Padang Cassia

What is Padang Cassia?

  • Adding flavor to food
  • Digestive upset
  • Blood sugar support
  • Antimicrobial purposes
  • Antioxidant support

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.
