Padang Cassia and Glucagon

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Glucagon

Glucagon falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

Some clinical research shows that Padang cassia can reduce blood glucose levels in healthy patients and in patients with diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes). Theoretically, Padang cassia might have additive effects in patients treated with antidiabetes drugs. Dose adjustments to diabetes medications may be necessary.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's something worth understanding about this pairing. Glucagon isn't your typical daily diabetes pill. It's an emergency rescue treatment that tells your liver to dump stored sugar into your blood when you've crashed dangerously low. So glucagon actually raises blood sugar, the opposite of what cinnamon may do.

The interaction on file is about cinnamon's mild tendency to lower blood sugar. In theory, that could work against glucagon a little when you're trying to recover from a low. But honestly, the evidence here is fairly weak, and in a real emergency glucagon's effect is far stronger than any sprinkle of spice. Food amounts of cinnamon are unlikely to matter. Concentrated cinnamon supplements are worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you have frequent lows.

About Padang Cassia

What is Padang Cassia?

  • Adding flavor to food
  • Digestive upset
  • Blood sugar support
  • Antimicrobial purposes
  • Antioxidant support

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.
