Lacosamide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.

Here's the gist for Vimpat (lacosamide): your liver uses several enzymes to clear it, and one of them is CYP3A4. The concern on file is that concentrated Padang cassia (a cassia cinnamon) may slow down that enzyme. If lacosamide gets cleared a little more slowly, more of it can hang around, which could nudge up its side effects, things like dizziness, blurred or double vision, drowsiness, headache, or feeling unsteady on your feet.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes only from lab (test tube) research, not from people, so it's theoretical. Sprinkling cinnamon on your oatmeal almost certainly won't matter. Daily concentrated cinnamon capsules are the bigger question. Before adding those, run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.

About Lacosamide

What Is Lacosamide Used For?

Brand names: Vimpat, Motpoly XR

Lacosamide is used to treat partial-onset seizures (seizures that start in one part of the brain) in adults and children. The age at which it is approved depends on the specific product: Vimpat tablets, oral solution, and injection are approved for partial-onset seizures in patients as young as 1 month old; most other formulations are approved from age 4 and up; and Motpoly XR is approved for patients weighing at least 50 kg.

Lacosamide is also used as adjunctive (add-on) therapy for primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal seizures involving the whole brain) in adults and children 4 years of age and older, including Motpoly XR for patients weighing at least 50 kg.
