Salmeterol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.

Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down salmeterol (Serevent). Lab studies suggest a concentrated extract of Padang cassia can slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, salmeterol could linger a little longer and its effects could be amplified. With this drug, that mostly shows up as a faster or pounding heartbeat, shakiness or tremor in the hands, nervousness, headache, or low potassium.

Here's the reassuring part: this concern comes only from test-tube research, not from people, so it's theoretical. Salmeterol is also a regular medication, not a prodrug, so the direction here is increased effect rather than less. Sprinkling cinnamon on your food won't matter. If you're considering daily cinnamon capsules, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.

What Is Salmeterol Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand name: Serevent

Serevent Diskus (salmeterol inhalation powder) is used for three main purposes: treating asthma in patients aged 4 and older alongside an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS), preventing exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB) in patients aged 4 and older, and providing long-term maintenance treatment of bronchospasm associated with COPD — including chronic bronchitis and emphysema — in adults.

Important: Serevent Diskus is not a rescue inhaler. It will not relieve a sudden asthma or COPD attack. For asthma, it must always be used together with an inhaled corticosteroid — using it alone for asthma is contraindicated due to a serious risk of asthma-related death.
