Zanubrutinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.

Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear zanubrutinib (Brukinsa) from your system. In test-tube studies, an extract of Padang cassia appears to slow this enzyme down. If that happened in a person, zanubrutinib could build up a bit more than expected, which in theory could mean stronger effects and more side effects like bruising or bleeding, low blood counts, infections, tiredness, or an irregular heartbeat.

Here's the important context: this is only based on lab work, not human studies, so it's theoretical. Sprinkling cinnamon on your oatmeal is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated cinnamon capsules are a different story. Since zanubrutinib treats serious cancers, please check with your oncologist or pharmacist before adding any cinnamon supplement.

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.

What Is Zanubrutinib Used For?

Brand name: Brukinsa

Brukinsa (zanubrutinib) is used to treat adults with several types of blood cancers. These include chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL), Waldenström's macroglobulinemia (WM), mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) after at least one prior treatment, relapsed or refractory marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) after at least one prior anti-CD20 treatment, and relapsed or refractory follicular lymphoma (FL) — the last in combination with another medicine called obinutuzumab, after two or more prior treatments.

Some of these uses (MCL, MZL, and FL) have received accelerated FDA approval based on response rates, meaning they may be subject to further confirmation of long-term benefit in ongoing trials.
