Galantamine Extended Release falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Phellodendron interacts with.

Theoretically, phellodendron might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
Phellodendron contains berberine. In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence show that berberine can inhibit CYP2D6. Theoretically, phellodendron might also inhibit CYP2D6.

Here's the simple version. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to help clear galantamine (Razadyne ER). The berberine in phellodendron may slow that enzyme down. If it does, galantamine could clear a bit more slowly and build up in your system, nudging its effects and side effects upward.

With galantamine, that usually means more of its typical complaints: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, loss of appetite, or a slower heart rate. I want to be honest though, this concern is theoretical, based mostly on lab work, not strong human studies. Concentrated supplement doses are more likely to matter than tiny culinary amounts. Before combining these, please check with your pharmacist or doctor so they can watch for any of those symptoms.

Here's the gist of it. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down galantamine. The berberine in phellodendron may slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happens, galantamine could clear out of your system more slowly and build up to higher levels than usual.

For galantamine, more in the blood often means more of its typical side effects, things like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, a slow heartbeat, or loss of appetite. I'll be straight with you though: this is a theoretical concern based on lab and early research, not real-world reports, so it may never cause a problem. Still, since galantamine can be tough on the stomach and heart rate, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.
