Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind: insulin aspart (Fiasp) already does a powerful job of bringing your blood sugar down. Phellodendron contains berberine, and some research suggests berberine can nudge blood sugar lower on its own. So if you stack the two, the worry is that they add up and push your sugar down too far.

I'll be straight with you, this is a theoretical concern based on how berberine behaves, not solid proof it happens with phellodendron specifically. Still, low blood sugar from insulin is real, so watch for shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or confusion, and keep a fast sugar source handy. Don't change your insulin dose on your own. Just loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding this supplement so they can help you check your numbers.

About Phellodendron

What is Phellodendron?

Phellodendron
  • Digestive complaints and diarrhea
  • Inflammation and joint discomfort
  • Stress and weight management (in combination products)
  • Skin conditions (topical, traditional)
  • Antimicrobial support

Phellodendron is a traditional Chinese medicine bark (Huang Bai) that contains berberine and other plant compounds with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity in lab studies. Human evidence for most uses is limited, and it is often sold in combination with other herbs, making its individual effects hard to judge. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Insulin Aspart (rDNA Origin) Injection

What Is Insulin Aspart (rDNA Origin) Injection Used For?

Brand name: Fiasp

Insulin aspart is used to improve blood sugar (glucose) control in people with diabetes mellitus. It is approved for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes in adults, and for diabetes mellitus in pediatric patients.

Insulin Aspart Protamine and Insulin Aspart Mix 70/30 is a pre-mixed product that combines a rapid-acting and an intermediate-acting insulin aspart. It is approved to improve blood sugar control in adult patients with diabetes mellitus. It is not recommended for treating diabetic ketoacidosis, and because its ratio of rapid-acting to intermediate-acting insulin is fixed, it does not allow for separate mealtime versus background dose adjustments.
