Citalopram falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Psilocybin interacts with.

Theoretically, combining psilocybin with serotonergic drugs might cause additive serotonergic effects.
Psilocybin has serotonin 2A (5-HT2A) receptor agonist activity. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with psilocybin might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the idea behind this one. Your citalopram (Celexa) already raises serotonin in your brain to help with mood. Psilocybin turns into psilocin, which switches on serotonin receptors too. Stack the two together and you're pushing on the same system from two directions, so in theory you could get too much serotonin activity.

That could show up as agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, tremor, or confusion, the cluster doctors call serotonin syndrome. I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based on how these drugs work, and it hasn't actually been reported in people taking them together. Psilocybin is also investigational and illegal in most places. Please don't change your citalopram on your own, just talk it through with your doctor or pharmacist first.

What Is Citalopram Used For?

Brand name: Celexa

Citalopram — available as tablets (including brand Celexa), oral solution, and capsules — is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. This includes depression that causes persistent low mood, loss of interest in everyday activities, changes in sleep or appetite, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

Citalopram capsules are specifically indicated for adults with MDD but are not intended for starting or stopping treatment — another citalopram product must be used for dose titration. All forms are indicated for adults only; citalopram tablets are not approved for use in children.
