Pu-erh Tea and Benazepril, Hydrochlorothiazide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

DIURETIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Benazepril, Hydrochlorothiazide

Benazepril, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Pu-erh Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, using pu-erh tea with diuretic drugs might increase the risk of hypokalemia.
Pu-erh tea contains caffeine. Caffeine, especially in excessive amounts, can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with your Lotensin HCT. The hydrochlorothiazide part is a water pill that can nudge your potassium level down. Pu-erh tea has caffeine, and a lot of caffeine can also push potassium a little lower. So the theory is that drinking a great deal of pu-erh on top of your diuretic could add up and leave potassium too low, which might show up as muscle cramps, weakness, or an irregular heartbeat.

Honestly, this is a minor, theory-based concern, and a cup or two of tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. The benazepril side actually tends to hold potassium up a bit, which softens the effect. Enjoy your tea in normal amounts, and if you feel unusually tired or crampy, check in with your pharmacist or doctor about your potassium.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Benazepril, Hydrochlorothiazide page

“Lotensin HCT (benazepril with hydrochlorothiazide) lowers blood pressure two ways at once, and that is exactly why this list deserves a careful read rather than a skim. Most of the interacting supplements either stack on that effect and drop pressure too far, or push against it and undo the control the drug provides.”
