Here's the key thing to understand: the active ingredient in red yeast rice is essentially the statin lovastatin, and your liver clears it using an enzyme called CYP3A4. Panobinostat (Farydak) is a mild blocker of that same enzyme. So when they're taken together, your body may clear the lovastatin in red yeast rice more slowly, letting it build up to higher levels than expected.

Higher statin levels can mean a bigger chance of muscle aches, weakness, or (rarely) more serious muscle breakdown, along with possible liver strain. This concern is theoretical, based on how the drugs are processed rather than real-world reports, so don't panic. But since you're already managing multiple myeloma with a demanding regimen, please run any red yeast rice use past your oncology team or pharmacist first.

What Is Panobinostat Used For?

  • Panobinostat is used in combination with bortezomib (Velcade) and dexamethasone to treat people with multiple myeloma (a type of cancer of the bone marrow) who have already been treated two other medications, including bortezomib (Velcade). Panobinostat is in a class of medications called histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors. It works by killing cancer cells.
