Theoretically, rhodiola might increase the risk of adverse effects when taken with antidepressants.
A review of adverse event reports in Poland identified cases of tachyarrhythmias, myalgia, arthralgia, gum pain, restless leg syndrome, swallowing disorders, and changes in consciousness when rhodiola was taken in combination with paroxetine, escitalopram, fluoxetine, sertraline, trazodone, and/or duloxetine.

If you're taking venlafaxine (Effexor) for depression or anxiety, here's the honest picture: this concern is mostly theoretical and based on scattered case reports, not solid studies. Rhodiola may gently nudge brain messengers like serotonin in the same direction venlafaxine does. The worry is that stacking the two could add up to too much serotonin-like activity.

In real life, that might show up as a faster or irregular heartbeat, jitteriness, muscle or joint aches, restlessness, or feeling off mentally. These overlap with venlafaxine's own known side effects, so they can be hard to tease apart. The evidence here is weak and the risk is rated minor, so don't panic. Still, before adding rhodiola, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Venlafaxine is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) across all available formulations. Extended-release capsules (including Effexor XR) are also approved for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and panic disorder (PD).

Extended-release tablets are approved for major depressive disorder and social anxiety disorder. Immediate-release venlafaxine tablets are indicated for major depressive disorder only.
