Flutamide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP1A2 substrates may increase the effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems inhibits CYP1A2 enzyme activity.

Here's the short version: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 to help break down flutamide. Rooibos, at least in test-tube studies, seems to slow that enzyme down a bit. In theory, that could let a little more flutamide build up than usual, which might mean a slightly higher chance of its typical side effects, like nausea, diarrhea, hot flashes, or changes in your liver tests.

Now, please don't worry too much. This is based only on lab research, not real people, so we honestly don't know if a cup of rooibos tea does anything meaningful. Enjoy your tea, but since flutamide and your liver are already being watched closely during prostate cancer treatment, it's worth a quick mention to your oncologist or pharmacist, especially before using concentrated rooibos extracts.

Here's the gist with flutamide and rooibos. Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help process flutamide. Lab studies (done in test tubes, not people) suggest concentrated rooibos extract can slow that enzyme down. In theory, that could let a bit more flutamide build up, which might mean stronger effects and more of its usual side effects, like hot flashes, breast tenderness, nausea, diarrhea, or changes in liver tests.

I want to keep this in perspective: this is theoretical and based only on lab work, not real patients. A cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated rooibos supplements are the bigger question mark. Since flutamide already needs liver monitoring, just mention any rooibos extracts to your pharmacist or oncologist before starting them.

About Flutamide

What Is Flutamide Used For?

Brand names: Eulexin, Euflex

Eulexin (flutamide) capsules are used to treat prostate cancer in men. They are always used together with an LHRH agonist (a hormone-lowering injection), never alone.

Eulexin is indicated for two stages of prostate cancer: locally confined Stage B2-C prostate cancer (used alongside goserelin acetate and radiation therapy, starting eight weeks before radiation begins) and Stage D2 metastatic prostate cancer (cancer that has spread beyond the prostate, taken with an LHRH agonist until the disease progresses).
