Why this applies to Lacosamide

Lacosamide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP2C9 substrates may increase the effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems inhibits CYP2C9 enzyme activity.

Here's the gist for Vimpat (lacosamide): your body partly clears this seizure medicine using a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. In lab dish studies, a concentrated rooibos extract seemed to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, lacosamide could clear a little slower and build up, which might mean more of its usual side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, blurry or double vision, headache, or nausea. Lacosamide is active on its own, so this isn't a prodrug situation.

The honest reality: this is only a theoretical concern from test-tube research, not from people, and rooibos as a regular cup of tea is unlikely to be a problem. I'd be more cautious with concentrated rooibos extracts. Either way, check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding them.

Here's the gist for your Vimpat (lacosamide). Your body partly clears this seizure medicine using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In test-tube studies, a concentrated rooibos extract slowed that enzyme down. In theory, that could let a bit more lacosamide hang around in your system, which might nudge up its usual side effects like dizziness, double or blurred vision, drowsiness, headache, or feeling unsteady on your feet.

I want to keep this in perspective, though. This is only lab data, not something proven in people, and lacosamide isn't even mainly handled by CYP3A4. A regular cup of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated rooibos supplements are the bigger question mark, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting one.

About Lacosamide

What Is Lacosamide Used For?

Brand names: Vimpat, Motpoly XR

Lacosamide is used to treat partial-onset seizures (seizures that start in one part of the brain) in adults and children. The age at which it is approved depends on the specific product: Vimpat tablets, oral solution, and injection are approved for partial-onset seizures in patients as young as 1 month old; most other formulations are approved from age 4 and up; and Motpoly XR is approved for patients weighing at least 50 kg.

Lacosamide is also used as adjunctive (add-on) therapy for primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal seizures involving the whole brain) in adults and children 4 years of age and older, including Motpoly XR for patients weighing at least 50 kg.
