Here's a wrinkle worth knowing: losartan is actually a prodrug. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 to convert it into its more powerful active form (called E-3174), which does most of the real blood-pressure-lowering work. Rooibos, in lab-dish studies, appears to slow that same CYP2C9 enzyme down.

So in theory, rooibos could mean less of that active form gets made, which might make losartan a touch less effective at controlling your blood pressure. That said, this is based only on test-tube research using concentrated extracts, not real people drinking tea. A cup or two of rooibos is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you lean on strong rooibos extracts, or notice your blood pressure creeping up, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

Here's something interesting about losartan: your body actually needs to convert it into its more active form, and the CYP3A4 enzyme helps with that step. So losartan behaves a bit like a prodrug. The lab note on file suggests rooibos may block CYP3A4. In theory, slowing that enzyme could leave you with a little less of the fully active drug, which might make your blood pressure control slightly weaker.

Now, take a deep breath. This is based only on test-tube research, not real people, and a daily cup of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause a problem. If you're using concentrated rooibos extracts, or you notice your blood pressure creeping up, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Losartan

What Is Losartan Used For?

Brand name: Cozaar

Losartan tablets — available as branded Cozaar and several generic products — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Losartan tablets are also used to reduce the risk of stroke in people with high blood pressure who also have left ventricular hypertrophy (an enlarged left side of the heart). Note: evidence suggests this stroke-risk benefit may not apply to Black patients.

Losartan tablets are additionally approved to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and signs of kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy). Arbli, the oral suspension form, shares these same approved uses.
