Methadone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP2D6 substrates may increase the effects of CYP2D6 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme activity.

Here's the gist with methadone: lab studies hint that rooibos may block a liver enzyme called CYP2D6, which is one of the enzymes that helps clear methadone from your body. If that enzyme slows down, methadone could in theory build up a bit more than usual, which might mean stronger effects like extra drowsiness, slowed breathing, constipation, or feeling lightheaded.

The important part: this is only seen in test-tube research, not in real people, and a cup of rooibos tea is very different from a concentrated extract. So I wouldn't panic over your regular tea. Still, methadone is a medication where small changes can matter, so if you're using rooibos supplements or drinking a lot of it, give your pharmacist or doctor a heads up first.

Here's the gist with methadone and rooibos. Methadone is broken down partly by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In test-tube studies, a concentrated rooibos extract slowed that enzyme down. If that happened in your body, methadone could clear a bit more slowly and build up, which in theory means stronger opioid effects like extra drowsiness, slowed breathing, confusion, or constipation.

The important part: this is based only on lab research, not on people, so it's far from proven. Drinking rooibos as an everyday tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated rooibos supplements or extracts are the bigger question mark. Since methadone is a powerful medicine with a narrow safety window, just run any rooibos extract past your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Methadone

What Is Methadone Used For?

Brand name: Dolophine

Methadone treats severe and persistent pain that requires daily, around-the-clock, long-term opioid treatment and cannot be managed adequately with other options. It is available in several forms for this use, including oral solution, oral tablets, oral concentrate, and injectable forms (intravenous, intramuscular, and subcutaneous). Injectable methadone is not approved for outpatient pain treatment — it is reserved for hospitalized patients unable to take oral medication.

Methadone is also used for the detoxification and maintenance treatment of opioid addiction (dependence on heroin or other morphine-like drugs). Oral forms — including tablets, dispersible tablets (such as Methadose Dispersible and DISKETS), and oral concentrates (such as Methadone Hydrochloride Intensol™, Methadose, and others) — are approved for this use. By law, methadone for opioid addiction treatment must be dispensed only by certified opioid treatment programs. Injectable methadone is not approved for outpatient addiction treatment.
