Riluzole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP1A2 substrates may increase the effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems inhibits CYP1A2 enzyme activity.

Here's the short version: your body uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to clear riluzole out of your system. Lab tests (not human studies) hint that rooibos might slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, riluzole could build up slightly and hit a little harder, meaning you might notice more of its usual side effects like tiredness, dizziness, nausea, or weakness.

The good news is this is theoretical, based only on test-tube research using concentrated rooibos extracts. A cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Still, since riluzole already needs liver monitoring, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before you start drinking it daily or use rooibos supplements.

What Is Riluzole Used For?

Brand names: Rilutek, Tiglutik, Exservan

Riluzole is approved to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) — the progressive neurological disease also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This indication is shared across all available riluzole products, including tablets (Rilutek, riluzole), the dissolving oral film (Exservan), and the oral suspension (Tiglutik).

Tiglutik oral suspension is notable in that it can also be given through a PEG-tube (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube) for patients who have difficulty swallowing.
