Rooibos + Sildenafil
Sildenafil brand name: Revatio.
Sildenafil falls into 2 drug categories that Rooibos can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP2C9 substrates may increase the effects of CYP2C9 substrates.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Rooibos interacts with whole categories of medication. Sildenafil falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Rooibos in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Sildenafil
Sildenafil falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems inhibits CYP2C9 enzyme activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the short version: your body clears sildenafil partly through a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. Lab research suggests that compounds in rooibos may slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, sildenafil could hang around longer than usual, which might mean stronger effects and a higher chance of its typical side effects, things like headache, flushing, a stuffy nose, dizziness, or lightheadedness when you stand up.
The important caveat: this comes only from test-tube studies, not from people, so it's theoretical. Drinking rooibos as a regular tea is unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated extracts are the bigger question mark. If you use rooibos supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Sildenafil also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your body clears sildenafil mostly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies hint that rooibos may slow that enzyme down, which could let sildenafil linger a bit longer in your system. If that happens, you might notice its effects and side effects more strongly, things like headache, flushing, a stuffy nose, dizziness, or a dip in blood pressure.
Here is the reassuring part: this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube research using concentrated rooibos extract, not real people. A regular cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Still, if you use strong rooibos extracts, it is worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you take sildenafil for pulmonary hypertension.

- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Sildenafil page
“Sildenafil relaxes blood vessels, whether prescribed as Revatio for pulmonary hypertension or as Viagra, and that blood-pressure-lowering action makes this list one to treat with genuine care. Of the 160 supplement and herbal ingredients on file, five carry a major rating, and those deserve understanding first.”

About Rooibos
What is Rooibos?
- Caffeine-free beverage
- Antioxidant support
- Heart health
- Blood sugar support
- Digestive upset
- General wellness
Rooibos is a caffeine-free herbal tea from South Africa that is rich in antioxidants and generally considered safe as a beverage. While lab and early studies suggest possible benefits for heart health, blood sugar, and inflammation, strong human evidence is lacking for most medical uses. Enjoy it as a tea, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated extracts for health reasons.
About Sildenafil
What Is Sildenafil Used For?
Brand name: Revatio
Sildenafil treats two distinct conditions depending on the product. Viagra (tablet) and Vybrique (dissolving oral film) are approved for erectile dysfunction (ED) — difficulty getting or keeping an erection. Generic sildenafil tablets and oral film are also approved for ED.
Revatio and several generic sildenafil products (tablets, oral suspension, and injection) are used for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) — high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs — in adults to improve exercise ability and slow the disease from getting worse. Revatio oral suspension and injection are also approved for PAH in children ages 1 to 17.
