Here's the short version: your body partly uses an enzyme called CYP2C19 to break down vilazodone (Viibryd). Lab studies suggest rooibos may slow that enzyme down. If that happened in people, vilazodone could clear a little slower and build up, which might mean stronger effects and more of its usual side effects, like nausea, diarrhea, headache, trouble sleeping, or feeling jittery.

Now the reassuring part: this is based only on test-tube research using concentrated rooibos extract, not on real patients. A normal cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause a problem. If you're drinking large amounts or using a concentrated extract, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on how you feel.

Here's the basic idea with Viibryd (vilazodone) and rooibos. Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 as one way to help break vilazodone down. In test-tube studies, a concentrated rooibos extract slowed that enzyme a bit. If that happened in real life, vilazodone could clear a little more slowly and build up, which might mean stronger effects or more side effects like nausea, diarrhea, headache, trouble sleeping, or feeling jittery.

That said, this is very early lab evidence only, not something proven in people, and a cup or two of rooibos tea is unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated extracts are the bigger question mark. If you want to use those regularly, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Vilazodone hydrochloride tablets — sold as the brand Viibryd and as generic vilazodone hydrochloride — are approved to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. MDD is more than just feeling sad; it's a clinical condition involving persistent low mood, loss of interest, and other symptoms that significantly affect daily life.

Vilazodone is not approved for use in children or teenagers. Its safety and effectiveness have not been established in pediatric patients.
