Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP1A2 substrates may increase the effects of CYP1A2 substrates.

Here's the gist with rooibos and Zyflo (zileuton). Zileuton is cleared from your body partly by a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. In test-tube studies, compounds in rooibos appear to slow that enzyme down a bit. If it slows the enzyme in real life, zileuton could linger longer and have a slightly stronger effect, which may mean more of its usual side effects like nausea, stomach upset, headache, or changes in liver tests.

I want to be straight with you, though: this is theoretical, based only on lab data, not on real people. A regular cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you're using concentrated rooibos extracts, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Here's the gist for Zileuton (Zyflo). Your body partly clears this asthma medicine using a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. Lab studies hint that rooibos may slow that enzyme down. If that happens, Zileuton could clear more slowly and build up a bit, which in theory might nudge its effects and side effects higher. With Zileuton, that could mean things like nausea, stomach upset, headache, or changes in liver enzymes (your doctor already watches those with this drug).

Now, the honest part: this is based only on test-tube research, not on people, and a concentrated extract was used. A cup or two of rooibos tea is unlikely to cause trouble. Still, if you plan to use rooibos extracts regularly, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Here's the simple version: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear zileuton from your system. Lab studies hint that rooibos can slow that enzyme down. If it does, a little more zileuton could hang around than usual. That might mean a slightly stronger effect, and possibly more of zileuton's known side effects like nausea, stomach upset, headache, or changes in liver tests.

Now the reassuring part: this concern comes only from test-tube studies using concentrated rooibos extract, not from real people drinking tea. A normal cup or two is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you regularly use strong rooibos extracts, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up so they can keep an eye on things.

About Zileuton

What Is Zileuton Used For?

Brand names: Zyflo, Zyflo CR

Zileuton is used for the ongoing prevention and treatment of asthma in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older. It is a maintenance medicine — meaning it is taken regularly to keep asthma under control, not to stop an asthma attack once it has started.

Zyflo (the tablet form) and zileuton extended-release tablets are both approved for this same purpose. Neither form should be used to treat a sudden asthma attack. However, both can be continued during a flare-up of asthma while you also use your rescue inhaler.
