The product you're asking about pairs belladonna with phenobarbital, and phenobarbital is a barbiturate that already slows down the brain and nervous system. Sassafras has been reported to have its own mild sedative-type effects, so the concern here is simple: stacking the two could add up. You might feel more drowsy, foggy, or unsteady than expected, with slower reactions and possibly more dizziness.

To be fair, this caution is theoretical, based on how these things behave in the lab rather than strong human studies, so I don't want to overstate it. But sassafras also contains safrole, which can harm the liver and may cause cancer, and the FDA banned it in foods for good reason. Please don't change your medicine on your own. Check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Belladonna, Phenobarbital also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INDUCERS.

In vitro research suggests that cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) inducers might increase the cytotoxicity of safrole. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Also, it is not known if CYP1A2 inducers increase the toxicity of sassafras. Inducers of CYP1A2 include omeprazole (Prilosec).

Here's the angle on this one: phenobarbital is a well-known enzyme booster, meaning it speeds up several liver pathways, including CYP1A2. The concern with sassafras is that its main compound, safrole, may become more harmful to liver cells when those enzymes are revved up. In simple terms, taking phenobarbital (the phenobarbital part of Bellophen or Susano) alongside sassafras could in theory make safrole's liver and cancer-causing potential worse.

I'll be straight with you though: this idea comes only from lab and animal work, not from people, so it's theoretical. The bigger point is that sassafras containing safrole isn't safe to take internally at all, so I'd skip it. Please run any sassafras product past your pharmacist or doctor first.

Sassafras is an aromatic North American tree whose root bark and oil were once popular in teas and as a flavoring, but it contains safrole, a compound the FDA has banned in foods because it can cause cancer and liver damage. There is no good evidence it safely treats any health condition, and most experts recommend avoiding internal use. If you want the flavor, choose products that are labeled safrole-free.
