Rabeprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INDUCERS — the group Sassafras interacts with.

In vitro research suggests that cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) inducers might increase the cytotoxicity of safrole. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Also, it is not known if CYP1A2 inducers increase the toxicity of sassafras. Inducers of CYP1A2 include omeprazole (Prilosec).

Here's the gist of this one. Rabeprazole (Pariet) is an acid reducer for heartburn and reflux, and like its cousin omeprazole, it can nudge up the activity of a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. The concern isn't that sassafras changes how your rabeprazole works. It's the other way around: by speeding up that enzyme, rabeprazole could in theory make sassafras (specifically its compound safrole) more toxic to cells.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This is based only on lab and animal studies, and it has never been reported in real people. We don't even know for sure it happens in humans. The bigger issue is that sassafras itself isn't considered safe to take internally because safrole is linked to liver damage and cancer. My honest advice: skip internal sassafras, and ask your pharmacist if you want a safrole-free flavoring instead.

Sassafras is an aromatic North American tree whose root bark and oil were once popular in teas and as a flavoring, but it contains safrole, a compound the FDA has banned in foods because it can cause cancer and liver damage. There is no good evidence it safely treats any health condition, and most experts recommend avoiding internal use. If you want the flavor, choose products that are labeled safrole-free.

About Rabeprazole

What Is Rabeprazole Used For?

Rabeprazole delayed-release tablets treat a range of acid-related conditions in adults, including healing and maintenance of erosive or ulcerative GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), symptomatic GERD, duodenal ulcers, and pathological hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. They are also used alongside antibiotics (amoxicillin and clarithromycin) to eradicate H. pylori bacteria and reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer coming back.

In adolescents 12 years and older, rabeprazole delayed-release tablets are approved for short-term treatment of symptomatic GERD. Both AcipHex and Rabeprazole Sodium delayed-release tablets share this indication set for adults and adolescents 12 and older.
