Shepherd's Purse and Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG)

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

THYROID HORMONE

Why this applies to Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG)

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) falls under THYROID HORMONE — the group Shepherd's Purse interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use may interfere with thyroid dysfunction therapy.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the honest picture: the interaction we have on file was written for thyroid hormone medications, and HCG (Pregnyl) is not a thyroid drug. HCG is an injected hormone used mostly for fertility, to trigger ovulation in women or to support testosterone production in men. So the listed concern about interfering with thyroid therapy doesn't really line up with how HCG actually works.

On top of that, this whole interaction is rated as theoretical, based on how the herb might behave rather than on real human studies. I'm not aware of solid evidence that shepherd's purse changes how HCG works. Still, since shepherd's purse can affect bleeding, blood pressure, and the uterus, and HCG is often used around pregnancy, please run this combination by your doctor or pharmacist before mixing them.

About Shepherd's Purse

What is Shepherd's Purse?

Shepherd's Purse
  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
  • Minor bleeding (nosebleeds, wounds)
  • Mild diuretic
  • Digestive complaints
  • After-childbirth bleeding (traditional)

Shepherd's purse is a traditional herb most often used to help slow heavy menstrual bleeding and other minor bleeding, but solid human research is very limited. Because it may affect blood clotting, blood pressure, and the uterus, it should be avoided during pregnancy and used cautiously under professional guidance.
