Why this applies to Alogliptin

Alogliptin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Sulforaphane interacts with.

Theoretically, sulforaphane might increase the levels and effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Animal and in vitro research shows that sulforaphane inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity and downregulates its expression. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the honest picture with broccoli-derived sulforaphane and your alogliptin (Nesina). In lab and animal studies, sulforaphane can slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Since alogliptin is partly handled by that same enzyme, the theory is that blocking it could let a little more drug linger in your body and slightly strengthen its effect.

For alogliptin, stronger effect mostly means a bit more blood-sugar lowering, so watch for shakiness, sweating, or feeling lightheaded, especially if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea. That said, this is only theoretical right now and hasn't been seen in people. Eating broccoli is no worry at all. If you're considering a concentrated sulforaphane supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.
