Turmeric + Acarbose
Acarbose brand names: Precose, Prandase, Glucobay.
Acarbose falls into 2 drug categories that Turmeric can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, turmeric might increase the risk of liver damage when taken with hepatotoxic drugs.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Turmeric interacts with whole categories of medication. Acarbose falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Turmeric in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Acarbose
Acarbose falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Turmeric interacts with.
There is concern that turmeric might cause hepatotoxicity, especially when highly bioavailable formulations are used in high doses.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with acarbose and turmeric: this isn't about turmeric changing how acarbose works in your blood sugar. Acarbose mostly stays in your gut and slows how you digest carbs, so the two don't really fight over the same enzymes. The real concern is the liver. Acarbose can occasionally stress the liver, and there are scattered reports that concentrated turmeric (especially the high-absorption supplement forms in big doses) might do the same. Stacking two things that can each bother the liver is the worry here.
To be honest, this is theoretical and based on anecdotal reports, not strong proof. Normal cooking amounts of turmeric in food are very unlikely to matter. If you take turmeric capsules regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your liver, and don't change anything on your own.

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS
2 of 2Acarbose also falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS.
Animal research and case reports suggest that curcumin, a turmeric constituent, can reduce blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes. Furthermore, clinical research in adults with type 2 diabetes shows that taking curcumin 475 mg daily for 10 days prior to taking glyburide 5 mg decreased postprandial glucose levels for up to 24 hours when compared with glyburide alone, despite the lack of a significant pharmacokinetic interaction. Other clinical studies in patients with diabetes show that taking curcumin daily can reduce blood glucose levels when compared with placebo.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: turmeric, mainly its curcumin part, may gently nudge your blood sugar lower on its own. Acarbose (Precose) already works to blunt the sugar spike after meals, so stacking the two together could add up and make your blood sugar drop a little more than expected. This isn't about one changing how the other is broken down. It's simply two things pushing blood sugar in the same direction.
To be fair, the evidence here is on the weaker side, drawn from animal work, case reports, and small studies. Food and cooking amounts of turmeric are very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated curcumin supplements are where I'd pay closer attention. If you take both, keep an eye out for shakiness, sweating, or feeling lightheaded, check your numbers, and chat with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

About Turmeric
What is Turmeric?
- Joint pain and arthritis
- Inflammation
- Digestive upset
- Antioxidant support
- Skin conditions
Turmeric is a popular spice whose main active compounds, curcuminoids, are studied mostly for inflammation and joint pain. Some research is promising, but quality is mixed and curcumin is poorly absorbed on its own. For most people, dietary amounts are safe, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated supplements, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or have a medical condition.
About Acarbose

Brand names: Precose, Prandase, Glucobay
Acarbose tablets are used to help manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is always used together with a proper diet and regular exercise — not as a replacement for them.
Acarbose can be used on its own or combined with other diabetes medicines, such as sulfonylureas, insulin, or metformin, to further improve blood sugar control.

Acarbose Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Acarbose as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Turmeric — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
