Turmeric + Brincidofovir
Brincidofovir brand name: Tembexa.
Turmeric has a moderate interaction with Brincidofovir. Theoretically, turmeric might increase blood levels of OATP4C1 substrates.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP)
Why this applies to Brincidofovir
Brincidofovir falls under ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP) — the group Turmeric interacts with.
In vitro research shows that the turmeric constituent curcumin competitively inhibits OATP4C1 transport. This transporter is expressed in the kidney and facilitates the renal excretion of certain drugs. Theoretically, taking turmeric might decrease renal excretion of OATP substrates.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for Brincidofovir (Tembexa), the antiviral used to treat smallpox. Turmeric's main compound, curcumin, has been shown in lab dish studies only to block a kidney transporter called OATP4C1. That transporter helps your kidneys clear certain drugs out of your body. In theory, if it's slowed down, a drug like brincidofovir could clear a little more slowly and build up slightly, which might mean more of its typical side effects, such as nausea, diarrhea, belly pain, or changes in liver blood tests.
I want to be honest with you though: this is a theoretical concern based on test-tube research, not real people. Everyday turmeric in food almost certainly won't matter. Still, before adding a concentrated curcumin supplement, run it past your pharmacist or doctor.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
- AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
- BCase-control study.
- CConsensus.
- DAnecdotal evidence.

About Turmeric
What is Turmeric?
- Joint pain and arthritis
- Inflammation
- Digestive upset
- Antioxidant support
- Skin conditions
Turmeric is a popular spice whose main active compounds, curcuminoids, are studied mostly for inflammation and joint pain. Some research is promising, but quality is mixed and curcumin is poorly absorbed on its own. For most people, dietary amounts are safe, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated supplements, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or have a medical condition.
